Firefighter Job Application

The application deadline is Friday, March 28, 2025, at 2:00 p.m.

Starting Salary: $60,000

Senior Firefighter or 5th Year Pay: $89,314.96

Minimum Requirements:

At least 20 years of age and have not reached the age of 35 by Monday, April 28, 2025, unless exempt by state statute. Note – must be 21 years of age at date of hire
U.S. Citizen
High school diploma or equivalent
No felony convictions
Valid driver’s license
Must attend and successfully complete the physical assessment fire zone test hosted by the Jacksonville FD at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 26th. Testing will take place at the Jacksonville Fire Department, 200 West Douglas Ave. Jacksonville, IL 62650
- The test will include physical training, climbing ladders, and the dragging and lifting of heavy weight.
- Additional information will be provided to applicants at a later date.

For a permanent position:

Must complete a one-year probationary period and attain the certifications listed below within the first 3 years of service:
- IDPH EMT – Basic License
- IDPH EMT – Paramedic License
- Basic Operations Firefighter from the IL OSFM
- Hazmat Operations from the IL OSFM
- Vehicle Machinery Operations from the OSFM

Required Documentation due March 28, 2025, at 2:00 p.m.:

Mark your calendar to participate in the Candidate Physical Ability Test at the Jacksonville Fire Department on Saturday, April 26th at 8:00 a.m. (If for some reason you are unable to attend the physical test, please contact the Jacksonville Fire Department at (217)479-4656 by the application deadline)

Virtual Testing Information:
Your exam will be offered electronically, and you will take the exam in your own home. Testing session(s) will be offered to eligible candidates and will be proctored virtually. Session(s) will be offered during business hours the week of April 28, 2025, and no evening or weekend sessions will be available – it is your responsibility to ensure you have the flexibility to test during these times. In mid-April you will receive an email with instructions on how to schedule and prepare for the exam.
